Necessity demands a Radical Restart? Introduction
I’m not sure if this has any basis in fact, but I recall it was popular in the 1960’s, to claim the Catholic Church believed war was a necessity for putting a society back on track and heading back in the right direction. Something on that theme anyway. Looking back I suppose it might have been a response, at some level, to the ‘Peace and Love’ message, with all it’s weird pagan attachments, of the period. Think of the last stages of Mr Whirlpool’s fictional life. Think I might have been slightly out in his actual name, but if you know the book you will recognise my reference.
Why do I bring this up? That’s a good question. During this long hot summer and for a number of years leading up to it, I have been mulling over the question; How on earth do you rouse enough people across the Free World to the disaster they are heading towards, unless they instigate a radical change of direction? My particular interest is what’s happening at present in the USA and the United Kingdom. Also, I should hasten to add, as I’m sure it’s relevant, I am observing both societies from afar. Let me also add, I accept there is a possibility it’s not these societies that are going in the wrong direction but my understanding of them.
I grew up in the postwar period, coming of age during the Cold War, now this might be important, I distinctly remember, walking to school, that’s what we did in those days, with two friends. Our topic for conversation would often be the previous night’s news and the ongoing Vietnam War, I can’t deny it, I was batting for the USA forces. I’m not sure my friends were, otherwise we wouldn’t have argued so much would we. Here is an interesting and relevant point, back in the day, we could have close friends with opposing political views, both sides accepting such a situation as part of the normal discourse of life.
As an aside, during that period the ‘Domino Effect’ was a respected argument. In later life, involved in business and interacting closely with the Malaysian Government Ministers and their teams, I decided to check out their appreciation of the argument. I had the luck to speak with Malays who had been within the Templer Inner Circle, during the ‘Emergency’. They, all those years later, with the Vietnam War history, were still convinced of the strength of the ‘Domino Effect’ argument.
what I find disturbing, yes, as a parent, isn’t so much the rabbit hole both seem to be descending into, best exemplified by the UK having a PrimeMinister who only recently claimed in all seriousness ‘Most women don’t have a penis’, implying some do. Or the USA at this moment having a President who with the best will in the world, has throughout his disastrous term of office, has in my opinion been the victim of ‘Elder Abuse’. I wouldn’t wish what that poor man has been through on anyone. Watching it has been like a rerun of the end days of the Soviet Union. No what I find disturbing is how what’s left of the free world is sleepwalking into a major global scale conflagration, and none of the ruling elite seen to notice or are doing more than paying lip service to those advisors who are pointing this out to them.
